How to Apply

Spanish Dual Language will be offered at Frank Porter Graham Elementary and at Carrboro Elementary

Incoming Kindergarten Applications

Any incoming Kindergartner living within the CHCCS district may apply to the Dual Language Program.

The application is a part of the normal registration process for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. Parents may signify interest in having their child attend the program by completing the appropriate section on the general registration form. No separate application is necessary.

Registrations must be complete by the end of May for consideration in the lottery, which will be held in June of each year to determine which Kindergarten students are selected to participate in the program.

Students selected for the Spanish program will attend either Frank Porter Graham or Carrboro Elementary, depending upon where they live. The map on this page shows school assignments for the Spanish Dual Language program.

The district will provide transportation to school.

Please note that the district reserves the right to move students to either school, regardless of residential address, in order to balance the number of native Spanish language speakers at each location.

For more information about registration for Kindergarten and First Grade, please see the district's Enrollment page.

Applications for Students in Grades 1-5

Students in grades 1-5 will follow a separate application process for enrollment into the Spanish Dual Language Program. This application process is conducted through the district's Office of the Dual Language Coordinator.

Students enrolling in the program at the higher grades must have literacy skills in Spanish on par with their peers.

The application and additional information is available on the district's Dual Language page.

Current Dual Language Students

Current Dual Language students can remain in the program without having to reapply. However, new Dual Language attendance zones (see map on this page) may mean that your child will be assigned to a different school in the 2013-2014 school year.

All Scroggs Elementary Spanish Dual Language students wishing to continue in the program will be assigned to Frank Porter Graham

FPG or Carrboro Elementary families who have been reassigned may file an official transfer request with our Enrollment Department if they wish to stay at the school they attended in the 2012-2013 school year.

Transfers will only be granted when space is available and when certain conditions have been met. For more information, please download detailed transfer guidelines here (PDF).

The district will not provide transportation for transfer students.
